BEGINNING ON JANUARY 1, 2018, sellers of single-family homes in Portland are required to obtain and disclose a Home Energy Report estimating energy use & associated costs. The scoring system is designed so that a “5” score is average, a “10” is in the top 10% of homes, and a “1” is in the bottom 10%. But so far, the Portland average is barely “4,” with most older homes over 2000 sq. ft. coming in even lower. Scoring a “1,” which happens frequently, does not mean your home is poorly built. A low home energy score just means there is significant room for improvement to reduce a home’s energy use. We have seen the cost of obtaining the report drop already and many companies are well under $200.
